Can I pick and choose a pager phone number?

Every so often we get inquiries regarding changing a pager phone number to a specific phone number that ends in repeating digits or spells out a name, such as a vanity phone number. 

Unfortunately, we are unable to pick and choose the numbers assigned to a pager other than choosing the area code that is local for a specific geographical area. That would be the extent of what we can do. 

In addition, pager phone numbers are not guaranteed to be yours for life. At some point in the future, it is possible that we would get a notification from the paging carrier that we would need to change the pager phone number.  In addition, unlike traditional landline and cellphone numbers, pager numbers ARE NOT transportable so you CANNOT move a pager phone number to a landline or cellphone or vice versa.

If you are concerned about losing your pager phone number, or you would like a specific vanity number, there is a possible solution.  We suggest using a virtual phone service provider and then forwarding the virtual phone number to your pager phone number.  There is a cost for a virtual phone service but in addition to being able to pick and choose your number, you will have full control over where the number rings to.  You can even set up extensions such as "Press 1 to reach my cellphone, press 2 to reach my emergency pager" etc.   One of the virtual pager phone number providers that we can recommend and are quite familiar with is called Grasshopper.  You can sign up for a Grasshopper virtual phone number here and save some money too!

This will also give you full control of the phone number so that you can forward the number to a cellphone, landline or other device in the future.

If you are already using a virtual phone service provider for your main phone system, you could simply set up one of your extensions to ring to the pager's phone number. 

It is important to mention that if you have an alphanumeric pager, the pager's email address cannot be changed even when using a virtual phone number.
